How English Helped Me Find My Way Home

Growing up in a third-world country is tough. Opportunities are limited, and most jobs don’t pay enough to live a decent life. No matter how hard you work — even if you work day and night — the compensation often isn’t enough to support your needs or dreams.

For many ordinary Filipinos who didn’t grow up with wealth, going abroad feels like the only hope. We believe that life will be better overseas, that we’ll earn more — and to some extent, that’s true. But going abroad isn’t just about buying a plane ticket. It requires skills, confidence, and mastery of a language, especially English.

That’s why I pursued a degree in Secondary Education, majoring in English. I knew deep down that this path would open more doors. And it did. After graduating, I felt the strong urge to travel and teach, so I moved to Vietnam. I believed that teaching abroad would finally change my life.

But it wasn’t as easy as I imagined. Living in a place where you don’t speak the language, where you're far from family, and where every day feels like a challenge — it was overwhelming. I found opportunities, yes. I was able to teach. But being alone, the anxiety, the pressure — it was hard, especially as a young woman with only dreams in her pocket.

Thankfully, I had a part-time job teaching English online. That job kept me grounded. It made me realize that maybe going abroad wasn’t the only way to succeed. Maybe, I could create a better life right where I am.

So, I came home. But coming home didn’t feel like giving up. It felt like a breath of relief. I brought back experience, wisdom, and purpose. I continued teaching English online — and I began helping students find joy in learning the language.

Today, I’m still in the Philippines. I don’t earn as much as I could overseas, but I earn enough to live, grow, and stay close to the people and places I love. English gave me that chance. It gave me freedom. It gave me the ability to work from anywhere — even from home — and still live a meaningful life.

I used to think I had to leave to succeed. Now, I know I just needed the right skill — and a little courage — to build the life I wanted.

To anyone out there who feels stuck or unsure of the future — don’t lose hope. Invest in yourself. Learn a skill that can open doors, no matter where you are in the world. For me, that skill was English. It changed my life. It can change yours, too.
